Geely E2 Targets Europe’s Affordable EV Market With 345 KM Range and Five-Star Safety

The Geely E2 arrives in Europe with a starting price around €20,000, up to 345 km of WLTP range, rear-wheel drive, a spacious cabin and a five-star 2026 Euro NCAP rating. Here’s what makes Geely’s compact EV an important new challenger.

Europe's affordable electric-car market is becoming one of the most competitive parts of the EV industry. For years, electric vehicles were often associated with high prices, large battery packs and premium technology. That is beginning to change as manufacturers turn their attention toward smaller, less expensive cars designed for buyers who simply want practical electric transportation. Geely is entering that battle with the Geely E2, a compact five-door electric hatchback aimed directly at urban drivers and first-time EV buyers. The formula is straightforward: keep the car compact enough for European cities, give it enough range for everyday use, provide modern technology and safety equipment, and price it close to €20,000. But the E2 is more interesting than its price alone. It combines rear-wheel drive, two battery sizes, up to 345 kilometers of WLTP range, a large touchscreen, surprisingly useful cargo space and a five-star rating under Euro NCAP's tougher 2026 testing protocol.  For Geely, the E2 could become one of its most important products as the Chinese automaker continues expanding across Europe.

A Small EV With Bigger Ambitions

geely_frontviewoptimized.webpThe Geely E2 sits in Europe's B-segment, putting it into the same general market as cars such as the Renault 5 E-Tech and other compact electric hatchbacks. At 4,135 mm long and 1,805 mm wide, it remains manageable enough for crowded streets and parking spaces. But Geely has tried to make efficient use of the footprint. The E2 has a 2,645 mm wheelbase, helping create more cabin space than its exterior size might suggest. Geely also gives the car a relatively upright shape rather than pushing it toward an extremely low, sporty profile. That approach matters in this segment. A small EV needs to be more than inexpensive. For many buyers, it may be the family's primary car, meaning passenger space, cargo capacity and everyday usability matter just as much as acceleration or styling. The E2 therefore feels designed around practicality first.

Compact Outside, Surprisingly Practical Inside

One of the E2's strongest features is its use of space. Geely lists 375 liters of rear cargo capacity, expanding to as much as 1,320 liters when the rear seats are folded. There is also a 70-litre front storage compartment, or frunk, which can be particularly useful for storing charging cables separately from luggage. An additional 28-litre storage area is positioned beneath the rear section, while the cabin includes other smaller storage solutions such as a passenger-side drawer. Those numbers make the E2 more versatile than its city-focused dimensions might initially suggest. The interior is designed around five occupants, with a flat rear floor and a wide rear bench intended to maximize passenger space. That doesn't automatically make it a replacement for a larger family crossover. But it does show how dedicated EV packaging can allow a relatively small car to make better use of its dimensions.

A Very Digital Cabin

The dashboard follows the increasingly familiar modern-EV approach. A 14.6-inch HD central touchscreen dominates the interior, accompanied by an 8.8-inch digital instrument display in front of the driver. Geely uses its Flyme Auto system as the main infotainment platform. There is also wireless phone charging and extensive voice interaction. The result is clearly intended to appeal to younger and more technology-focused buyers. But the E2 does not completely abandon physical controls. That is worth noting because Euro NCAP specifically praised the car's use of physical controls for important driving and infotainment functions during its safety assessment. That balance may prove more useful in everyday driving than simply replacing every switch with another touchscreen menu.

Two Battery Options

The European E2 lineup is built around two lithium battery capacities. The entry-level E2 Pro uses a 35.35 kWh battery paired with a 60 kW electric motor, equivalent to roughly 82 hp. Geely quotes a WLTP combined driving range of up to 252 kilometers. DC fast charging is rated at up to 60 kW. Higher versions use a larger 47.14 kWh battery and an 85 kW motor, producing roughly 116 hp. These versions increase WLTP combined range to as much as 345 kilometers and DC charging capability to 80 kW. Geely's European site quotes approximately 25 minutes for a 30-to-80-percent fast charge under suitable conditions. Those figures will not challenge long-range EVs with much larger battery packs. But that is not really the E2's purpose. For drivers covering mostly urban and suburban journeys, 345 kilometers of rated range could be enough to avoid the feeling that a small affordable EV must be restricted to very short trips.

Rear-Wheel Drive Is an Unusual Choice at This Price

One particularly interesting engineering decision is the E2's rear-wheel-drive layout. Many inexpensive compact cars traditionally use front-wheel drive because it is simple, familiar and cost effective. Geely instead places the E2's electric drive at the rear. The car also uses fully independent suspension, with Geely saying the chassis has been tuned specifically for European roads. This does not turn the E2 into a performance hatchback. That isn't what Geely is claiming. But separating steering duties at the front from propulsion at the rear can potentially improve steering feel and vehicle balance, while the electric drivetrain's immediate torque should make the car responsive at urban speeds. The E2 also has a tight 4.95-meters turning radius, an important advantage in city driving and parking.

Geely's 11-in-1 Electric Drive

The E2 also demonstrates how aggressively Chinese manufacturers are integrating EV components. Geely uses what it calls an 11-in-1 intelligent electric drive unit. Instead of installing numerous separate components around the vehicle, major drivetrain electronics and mechanical systems are consolidated into a compact integrated assembly. Geely says this reduces size and weight while improving efficiency and packaging. This kind of integration is becoming increasingly important in affordable EVs. Lower vehicle prices cannot rely only on using smaller batteries. Manufacturers also need to reduce the number, size and cost of individual drivetrain components. The E2 therefore represents something broader than another inexpensive electric hatchback. It illustrates how EV engineering itself is becoming more mature and more highly integrated.

Five Stars Under the Tougher 2026 Euro NCAP Tests

Safety may be one of the E2's strongest arguments. In September 2026, Euro NCAP awarded the Geely E2 a five-star safety rating under its new 2026 assessment protocol. That distinction matters because the 2026 protocol introduced a significantly revised safety assessment covering areas including crash protection, crash avoidance, occupant monitoring and post-crash response.

The tested Geely E2 Ultra received:

  • 65% - Safe Driving
  • 70% - Crash Avoidance
  • 85% - Crash Protection
  • 95% - Post-Crash Safety

euroncap_geelyoptimized.webpEuro NCAP found that the E2 performed strongly overall, particularly in occupant classification, driver monitoring, steering assistance and post-collision emergency systems. The car also includes a direct Child Presence Detection system, designed to warn when a child is detected inside the vehicle after occupants leave. Its advanced eCall system can automatically transmit information following a serious collision.

The Five-Star Rating Doesn't Mean the E2 Was Perfect

This is where it is important to go beyond simply repeating Geely's marketing. Euro NCAP's five-star result was strong, but the detailed assessment also identified weaknesses. During the frontal offset crash test, protection of the driver's legs was rated poor because of dummy measurements and pedal intrusion. Front-passenger chest protection was rated marginal in the full-width test, while driver chest protection was also marginal during the side-pole impact. Pedestrian and cyclist head protection was another mixed area, with Euro NCAP finding weaker protection across several portions of the bonnet. The autonomous emergency braking system also performed better in some scenarios than others. None of those issues prevented the E2 from receiving five stars. But including them gives buyers a more accurate picture than simply saying the car achieved the maximum rating.

Driver Assistance Goes Beyond Basic AEB

The E2 includes a broad range of modern driver-assistance technologies. Depending on version and market, these include systems such as:

  • Autonomous emergency braking
  • Lane departure warning and prevention
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Front cross-traffic alert
  • Door opening warning
  • Driver monitoring
  • Intelligent cruise control
  • Child presence detection
  • Emergency eCall

Euro NCAP also found the steering-assistance system capable of driver-initiated assisted lane changes. This level of technology is becoming increasingly common in affordable Chinese EVs. That creates pressure on established European manufacturers because buyers are beginning to expect features that previously appeared mainly on much more expensive cars.

Around €20,000 Changes the Conversation

Price is where the Geely E2 becomes particularly significant. In France, Geely lists the E2 Pro with a recommended starting price of €20,990, with a launch promotion previously reducing the effective price to €19,990 for qualifying buyers. In Germany, Geely has also promoted the E2 with an entry price of €19,990. Exact pricing differs by country, incentives and dealer, so there is no single European price. But positioning the E2 at roughly €20,000 places it into a very important part of the market. EV adoption cannot depend indefinitely on premium cars costing €40,000, €50,000 or more. For electric vehicles to move further into the mainstream, manufacturers need products that ordinary buyers can realistically compare with combustion-powered hatchbacks. That is the market Geely is targeting.

The Competition Is Getting Fierce

The E2 arrives just as Europe's small-EV segment is beginning to expand rapidly. Cars such as the Renault 5 E-Tech demonstrate that traditional European manufacturers are also taking affordable electric cars seriously. BYD and other Chinese manufacturers are competing aggressively as well. That means Geely cannot succeed simply by being inexpensive. Brand recognition, dealer availability, servicing, software quality, resale value and long-term reliability will become increasingly important as European buyers compare these vehicles over several years of ownership. This is arguably the E2's biggest challenge. Geely is a major global automotive group, but its own-brand presence in many European countries is still comparatively new. A competitive specification sheet can persuade someone to visit a showroom. A reliable dealer and aftersales network is what helps keep that customer.

An Award Gives the E2 Some Early Validation

The E2 has already received one notable piece of independent recognition in Europe. In September 2026, it won the German Car of the Year Value Award 2027, beating the other new-model entries in the award's value category. The jury involved nearly 50 automotive journalists and industry experts and evaluated 109 new vehicles for the 2027 model year. That award does not automatically make the E2 the best affordable EV in Europe. But it does reinforce one of the car's strongest characteristics: the amount of equipment, space, range and safety Geely is offering for the money.

Why the E2 Matters Beyond Geely

The bigger story surrounding the Geely E2 is not really about one hatchback. It is about how quickly the minimum standard for an affordable electric car is changing. Not long ago, a low-cost EV might have meant very limited range, basic equipment and obvious compromises. The E2 offers up to 345 kilometers of WLTP range, five doors, useful luggage capacity, modern infotainment, rear-wheel drive and a five-star Euro NCAP rating for around €20,000 in some European markets. That changes buyer expectations. And it increases the pressure on every manufacturer trying to compete in the same segment.

A Promising Affordable EV With One Big Question Remaining

On paper, the Geely E2 makes a strong case for itself. It is compact without being impractical. The larger battery offers enough range to move beyond purely urban use. The cabin provides modern technology without demanding premium-car money. And its five-star Euro NCAP result demonstrates that affordability does not necessarily require sacrificing modern safety standards. But specification sheets tell only part of the ownership story. For European buyers, the real test will come over the next several years: reliability, software support, dealer availability, parts supply, resale value and the quality of Geely's aftersales network. Those are areas that cannot be proven by a launch event or manufacturer brochure. If Geely gets them right, however, the E2 could become more than another inexpensive Chinese EV. It could become an example of how quickly the definition of an affordable electric car is changing.
