Geely is preparing to expand its electrified vehicle lineup in the Philippines with the arrival of a new flagship SUV. The Geely Monjaro EM-i is scheduled to make its Philippine debut by the end of October 2026, bringing the Chinese automaker's EM-i Super Hybrid technology into a larger, more premium D-segment SUV.

 

Geely describes the Monjaro EM-i as its “Executive Performance Flagship,” combining plug-in hybrid efficiency with intelligent electric all-wheel drive, a technology-focused cabin and a more premium approach to comfort. Its arrival also gives Geely another electrified model as competition among Chinese plug-in hybrid vehicles continues to grow in the Philippine market.

A New Flagship for Geely Philippines

The Monjaro name sits above Geely's more mainstream SUV offerings, and the upcoming EM-i version has been developed as a vehicle that can serve both executive and family use. Its name takes inspiration from Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest mountain, reflecting Geely's emphasis on ambition, capability and reaching new heights. More importantly, the Monjaro EM-i represents another step in Geely's transition toward electrified vehicles. Instead of relying solely on a conventional gasoline engine, the new SUV combines combustion and electric propulsion through the company's EM-i Super Hybrid system. For Philippine buyers who want the benefits of electric driving but are not yet ready to depend entirely on charging infrastructure, that combination could make the Monjaro EM-i particularly interesting.

EM-i Super Hybrid Technology

At the heart of the Monjaro is Geely's EM-i Super Hybrid system. Geely developed the technology to combine electric driving with the long-distance flexibility of a gasoline engine. Unlike a conventional hybrid that primarily uses its battery and electric motor to assist the engine, the plug-in configuration allows the Monjaro EM-i to be charged externally and driven for meaningful distances using electricity alone. Geely says its EM-i technology uses a dedicated hybrid engine designed around efficiency rather than adapting a conventional combustion engine for hybrid use. The company says its hybrid-specific engine can achieve thermal efficiency of up to 46.5 percent. For drivers, however, the more important question will be how efficiently the complete system performs in real Philippine driving conditions.

Government Filings Give Us an Early Look at the Powertrain

Geely has not yet published the final Philippine specification sheet, but government filings reported by local automotive publications provide an early indication of what may arrive. The filings list a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine combined with an electrified drivetrain and a three-speed dedicated hybrid transmission. Reported total system output reaches approximately 416 horsepower (306 kW) and 723 Nm of torque. The vehicle is also listed with a 29.8-kWh battery. Those figures would make the Monjaro EM-i considerably more performance-oriented than a typical fuel-economy-focused hybrid SUV. However, final specifications should be confirmed once Geely Motor Philippines officially launches the vehicle.

Up to 130 Kilometers of Electric Driving

Another important number appearing in Philippine government filings is an electric-only driving range of up to 130 kilometers, measured using the NEDC testing cycle. Combined gasoline and electric driving range is listed at approximately 1,095 kilometers. Those numbers illustrate one of the main advantages of a plug-in hybrid. For owners who can regularly charge at home or work, many shorter daily trips could potentially be completed primarily using battery power. For longer journeys, the gasoline engine remains available, reducing the dependence on public charging stations that comes with a fully electric vehicle. Actual range will naturally vary depending on traffic, driving style, weather, terrain and use of climate control.

Intelligent Electric All-Wheel Drive

One of the Monjaro EM-i's more important features is Geely's e-AWD Intelligent Electric All-Wheel Drive system. Geely says the technology can respond rapidly to changing road conditions and distribute power to improve traction and stability. The system is particularly significant because Geely says the Monjaro EM-i introduces its intelligent electric AWD technology to its overseas model lineup. For the Philippine market, an electrified AWD system could make the Monjaro attractive to buyers looking for additional traction during wet weather, provincial trips and changing road conditions without moving to a traditional large-displacement SUV. Reported drive modes include Pure, Hybrid, Power and Snow, allowing the vehicle to adjust its powertrain behavior according to driving conditions.

Built From the Beginning for Electrification

Underneath the Monjaro EM-i is Geely's GEA Evo architecture. Rather than treating electrification as an addition to an existing conventional platform, Geely designed the architecture around new-energy powertrains. The platform supports electrified propulsion while also allowing engineers to optimize passenger space, battery packaging, vehicle safety and electronic systems. It works together with Geely's GEEA 3.0 electronic and electrical architecture, which provides the foundation for many of the Monjaro's connected and intelligent features. This approach reflects a broader change among Chinese manufacturers. Instead of simply adding batteries and electric motors to traditional vehicles, newer platforms are increasingly being designed around electrification from the beginning.

A Large D-Segment SUV

Based on Philippine government filings, the Monjaro EM-i measures approximately 4,800 mm long, 1,895 mm wide and 1,700 mm tall, riding on a 2,845 mm wheelbase. That places it firmly in D-segment SUV territory. The size should provide substantially more cabin room than Geely's smaller crossovers while maintaining a five-seat configuration focused on passenger comfort. Geely's global Monjaro EM-i also emphasizes luggage capacity and flexible interior space, reinforcing the vehicle's positioning as both an executive and family SUV. Its exterior combines a large vertical grille with a strong shoulder line, distinctive blue lighting elements and a full-width rear light signature. The overall design is more restrained than some futuristic Chinese EVs, reflecting the Monjaro's more premium positioning.

A Cabin Built Around Screens and Comfort

Technology plays a major role inside the Monjaro EM-i. Based on specifications appearing in Philippine filings, the cabin includes a 12.3-inch digital instrument display, a large 15.4-inch central infotainment screen and a 25.6-inch head-up display. Geely's global model also features its Flyme Auto infotainment system. Comfort equipment reported for the vehicle includes leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control, wireless smartphone connectivity and power-adjustable front seats. Depending on the final Philippine specification, the Monjaro could also receive heating, ventilation and massage functions for its front seats. The combination suggests Geely isn't simply targeting buyers looking for another practical hybrid SUV. It is attempting to move the Monjaro further into premium territory.

AI Is Coming Into the Cabin

Perhaps the most unusual technology is something passengers cannot see from outside. The Monjaro EM-i will become Geely's first overseas model equipped with the Xingrui Intelligent Large Language Model. In simple terms, Geely is bringing artificial intelligence deeper into the vehicle's voice and infotainment system. Traditional automotive voice assistants usually depend on predefined commands. Large language model technology potentially allows a vehicle to understand more natural requests and conversational language instead of requiring drivers to memorize exact phrases. How well this works in the Philippine version — particularly with local accents, connectivity conditions and language support — will be an interesting area to examine when the vehicle arrives.

Battery Safety Is Also a Priority

As batteries become larger and plug-in hybrids spend more time operating electrically, battery protection becomes increasingly important. Geely equips the Monjaro EM-i with its Shendun Battery Safety System, designed to protect the battery and electrified powertrain. The SUV is also expected to include a comprehensive set of active driver-assistance technologies. Features appearing in Philippine filings include adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance, collision warning systems and a 540-degree camera system. The final Philippine equipment list will need to be confirmed at launch.

Entering an Increasingly Competitive Market

The Monjaro EM-i will not arrive in an empty segment. Chinese automakers have been rapidly expanding their electrified offerings in the Philippines, particularly through plug-in hybrid SUVs that combine substantial electric range with the convenience of a gasoline engine. That puts greater pressure on manufacturers to compete on more than just price. Range, charging capability, power, cabin technology, safety systems, after-sales support and ownership costs are becoming increasingly important differentiators. For Geely, the Monjaro EM-i provides an opportunity to demonstrate how far the brand can move beyond the affordable crossover segment and into a more premium class.

Pricing Could Determine Everything

There is still one major piece of information missing: the price. Geely Motor Philippines has not yet announced Philippine pricing, variants or the complete local specification. And those details could ultimately determine how competitive the Monjaro EM-i will be. Its combination of a large battery, plug-in hybrid system, intelligent AWD, premium interior and advanced electronics gives it an impressive specification on paper. But the Philippine market has become increasingly crowded with capable electrified SUVs. The right price could make the Monjaro EM-i a compelling alternative for buyers considering both mainstream and more premium SUVs. Price it too aggressively, however, and it could find itself competing with an even wider range of established brands.

October Will Give Us the Full Picture

For now, the Monjaro EM-i appears to be one of Geely's most technologically ambitious vehicles headed to the Philippines. It combines a large SUV body with meaningful electric-only range, a powerful plug-in hybrid drivetrain, intelligent AWD, advanced cabin technology and an increasing emphasis on artificial intelligence. More importantly, it shows how quickly Chinese vehicles are evolving. The conversation is no longer simply about offering more equipment for less money.
